July 30, 2024 ~ In Loving Memory of Joy Quick

July 30, 2024 ~ In Loving Memory of Joy Quick

A Gardener of Hearts and Minds.

Her roots ran deep, her branches wide.

She nurtured growth with love & pride.

In every life she touched and healed.

Her legacy of care, revealed.

Forever in our hearts, “a hui hou” dearest Joy.

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Joy Quick. Surrounded by love and family, Joy took her last breath on July 20. Her spirit and contributions will forever remain etched in our memories and the growth of our Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) profession on these Hawaiian Islands.

Joy was a beacon of compassion, dedication, and warmth, tirelessly serving as a Licensed MFT in Hawai'i and shaping our field for decades. Her journey began at East Carolina University, where she earned her Master of Arts in Sociology - MFT. As a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the North Carolina Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, Joy's passion for learning and professional development was evident from the start. She was a lifelong learner and educator, continuously sowing the seeds of knowledge and wisdom and touching the hearts of many families.

Joy served at the Salvation Army Addictions Treatment Services (SA-ATS) for 24 years, holding pivotal roles that showcased her versatility and leadership. From Admissions Director to Outpatient Services Director and finally Clinical Director, Joy's influence was profound and far-reaching. She was instrumental in providing detoxification and treatment services, embodying the essence of healing and recovery. Her work at SA-ATS was like the roots of a tree, providing stability and nourishment to those in need.

During her impactful tenure at Argosy University - Hawaii, she was the Director of Training for the MFT Program. Joy's legacy is one of growth and healing, much like a gardener tending to a garden, planting seeds with care, watering them with encouragement and love, and ensuring they are exposed to the right amount of sunlight. She nurtured the seeds of knowledge and compassion in her students and colleagues, developing potential sites for growth, and monitoring progress with a gentle but firm hand.

Exactly two years ago to this date, on July 30, 2022, Joy gifted me the dendrobium orchid lei (in the photo), our final time together—a moment forever etched in my heart.

She gently kissed my cheek, hugged me tightly, and whispered in a loving and motherly voice, "Please let me know how I may help you in any way." Her reassurance has become everlasting and vital to my journey. I was introducing my work—Integral and Transpersonal Family Therapy ®, and Joy had graciously introduced me at the presentation. Her introduction was the very nutrient I needed to help ITFT grow. That day, Joy provided a vital element to launch my life’s work. Thank you, Dear Lady. I will certainly be there to hug you again in the sacred space between our worlds...

Joy's family—her daughters Hannah and Amanda, and her sister Judy—were her heart and soul. Her love for them, and many other relatives not named here, was boundless. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, both personally and professionally.

In remembering Joy, let us honor her by continuing the systemic and relational work she was so passionate about. Let us be the gardeners of our profession, tending to our growth and the growth of those we guide, with the same care, compassion, and dedication that Joy exemplified.

May her memory be a blessing and her legacy remain a guiding light for us all. A hui hou, Dearest Joy. We love you and dearly miss you and your enchanting smile. Thank you for blessing our lives with your unconditional love and nurturing. Our love and prayers are with your family and friends and your beautiful spirit.

Humbled and Forever Grateful,

Dr. Deepa Ram-Souza, LMFT, Ph.D.

A post in “Caring Bridge” by Joy’s daughter, Amanda Quick on July 20, 2024:

Today's update

“Under the light of the full moon a Queen returned to her throne in the stars.

Joy took her final breath earth side and crossed the rainbow bridge exactly two hours before the peak of the full moon.

I’m humbled to have been able to be here on Oahu to midwife her journey and hold her hand and her heart in her final moments.

As her oldest daughter we’ve had our challenges but we have also had immense healing between us.

My mom and I share a special sort of bond, our lives intertwined and parallel in experiences. Twin sisters born across time and space, that came together to meet again. My channel to spirit and my connection to my mother’s essence will be ever present.

She asks that I remind you all that you can call on her in mediation and she will come. She may bring with her a story or a shared memory, and her open heart to listen. ❤️

Joy will be buried at sea per her wishes. Details of her celebration will come as soon we finalize them.

Thank you all for your love, support and energy as we have all been touched immensely.

We love you Mom, this is only bye for now. ”
